How we research and check our guides

Hours of service and ELD rules decide whether a driver gets fined or put out of service, so we hold our guides to a simple standard: primary sources, exact numbers, a date on every rule, and fast corrections.

Who writes our guides

Our guides, statistics pages and calculator explanations are written by Jeff Byrd, whose name is on each one. We don't publish content under invented names or a generic team byline.

2

Where facts come from

Every rule and number on a guide comes from a primary source, linked on the page:

  • Hours of service and ELD rules: the regulation text in 49 CFR Parts 390 to 397 (eCFR) and FMCSA's own guidance and FAQ pages.
  • Drug and alcohol testing: 49 CFR Part 382 and FMCSA's Clearinghouse pages.
  • Safety statistics: FMCSA, NHTSA, IIHS, CVSA or peer-reviewed research, with the year of the data.
  • Market rates and costs: the publisher of the data, such as DAT or ATRI, with the period it covers.
  • ELD and dash cam product facts: each company's own pages or FMCSA's registered ELD list, with the date checked.
3

One source of truth for HOS numbers

Every hours of service limit used in our graphics and calculators, such as the 11-hour driving limit, the 14-hour window, the 30-minute break and the 60/70-hour cycle, comes from a single rules file on our site, with its citation and the date it was checked. When a rule changes, we change it once and every page and calculator follows.

4

How we keep pages current

Before writing or updating a rule page, we check FMCSA's hours of service page and ELD news for changes, waivers and pilot programs in effect. We review rule pages when FMCSA publishes a change, and each page shows the date its facts were last checked.

5

What we won't publish

We don't publish anything that helps a driver exceed hours, edit logs improperly, misuse personal conveyance or defeat an ELD. We don't invent testimonials, rankings, prices, reviews or statistics. Examples are marked EXAMPLE.

6

Independence and partners

We're not affiliated with FMCSA, USDOT or any ELD provider. We do have referral partners, and they never get to edit our guides or decide what we recommend. Our disclosure page lists each one.

Corrections

If you find an error, use the contact page and pick Correction. Tell us the page, what's wrong and your source. We check it against the primary source, fix confirmed errors quickly, and update the page's checked date.
